Day 3

Day 3 is Strength. The kind I hope I will be getting more of so that these videos will get easier to do.
I didn't get much sleep last nite. It was one of those nights where you're just too tired and sore to sleep, you know? You figure you're gonna sleep like a baby and you actually do: waking up crying every half hour or so. Ha!
Anyway, I hit the mat early today and said a little prayer before starting -plus took an Advil in advance- and started to flow. This pacing was much better than yesterday's. Yesterday's class was for crazy people. Strength is a very demanding class, don't get fooled! I can handle lower body strength pretty good, but upper? MY ARMS HURT LIKE A MOTHER! I totally skipped the 2 sets of yogi pushups, and I don't feel bad about it because yogi pushups are the work of the devil. My chadurangas were done on my knees, but done nonetheless. And that side arm balance flow? Killer!
By the end of the class I was drenched in sweat again, but felt better than yesterday. I went ahead and did the Hardcore straight away and abs felt great. What bothered me (bother = frickin' pain) were my thighs while doing the legs up, down, open, close and back up part. Where the hell do you come up with these things, Travis? Sheesh... I just kept picturing in my mind the sweet ice chilled glass of cocount water that was waiting for me after working out. *drank it so fast I got brain freeze*
For lunchies munchies I had a very hearty and savory toasted organic fusilli chicken soup. It's supposed to be done with orzo, but poopoo Spain doesn't sell orzo anywhere. They say healthy food doesn't sell well here, so they just don't import it. I know. O_O

Another thing I wanted to tell you was that yesterday I did my meditation listening to some sweet Tibetan singing bowl music I have on my iPod and it was much, much better than Day 1 meditation. I was more calm and focused. The CD has several long tracks that aide in meditation and the sound is truly amazing. Use headphones for better acoustics. Here's the link to the music if any of you is interested: http://sevenmetals.com/
For dinner I had something light, since the soup had that fusilli pasta in there. I made myself a fresh salad with watercress, arugula and baby leaves with some bits of red plum, pear and fresh goat cheese sprinkled with sesame seeds.

Now it's time to go bye-bye and hopefully sleep better than yesterday. Seriously looking forward to Yin's class tomorrow. I love a good stretch!
Peace out.

  2. You are a beast!!! Way to go! Loved the comment: "MY ARMS HURT LIKE A MOTHER!" Aim High!!! lol.

The salad looks delicious. I love arugaula. I love almond slivers in my salads.

I just started the Take 10 meditation from www.headspace.com (day 2 completed today). I really like it and Andy's voice is very pleasant. I will probably subscribe after the 10 free days. I did an easy lunch-time yoga stretch class at lunch. After work it's swim intervals...I HATE swim intervals!!!

    2. The swim intervals killed me yesterday!!! I think I may have rather done the Cardio workout... maybe?

  4. I take the strength class over the cardio any day... GAH! Strength is killer too, as you said, but Cardio is insanity!

  5. I hope you don't mind following your blog each day of my journey as well, I think it's awesome seeing the journey from another yogi perspective, and to realize that I'm not the only one struggling! The fact that you are on day 49 and said it would get easier kind of comforts me, because Strength was really hard for me. Just like you, I don't have that much upper body strength so most of the dvd I was watching them doing it hahah I know you loved Yin so let's hope I do too :D

    1. Hey Marisa! I absolutely love that you follow my blog! I am super flattered: thank you! I am happy to see that some of my experiences with the program are helping you out in some way. It is interesting to compare notes with other people and even take a peek ahead to see what might be in store, yes? The program sure made me doubt myself those first two weeks; but the improvements are noticeable -and huge!- right after those initial and painful days. Keep at it and be strong! You will surprise yourself, I'm sure. And I love to read your comments, so please feel free to comment on anything and everything you like. I will keep an eye out and cheer you on. Yin is around the corner: let me know what you think ;)

  6. I''m so glad you wrote this blog. It's my touchstone as I start this program. I wanted to cry after strength today because, yes, my arms hurt like a mother! I was geared up for a hard crazy cardio yesterday thanks to your post, and luckily didn't find it as challenging as I expected. Today, however...today...
Thank you for your honesty and humor and encouragement. I'm going to skip ahead and look at your nice comments about how strong you are by day 89, and it'll keep me going.

    1. Hey Lisa!
Thanks so much for reading the blog and for your nice post! It makes me so happy to see that people are still reading it! I wished so much someone had done a diary of it before I began (so I could get an idea of what I was getting into) that I decided to go ahead and do it myself. Keep reading! That way you can see that things will get better, less painful and results will be popping up pretty soon. These days Cardio is one of my top fave classes of UY (who woulda thunk!) but Strength remains my nemesis. It's so damn tough! Oh well. Let's yoga on and remember: Ibuprofen is your friend ;)

    2. thanks for the encouragement! I haven't read too far on in your blog, but I wonder, did you stick to the schedule pretty much? Did you take days off? I'm having to tweak it to accommodate family life on the weekends. But so far, I really love it. And I'm so surprised at the emotionally cleansing aspect of it...whoa!
I will follow on with you and again, thank you for keeping this blog!

    3. Hey Lisa!
Sorry I took so long to reply, but I didn´t get notified of your latest post by Google. Anyway, here I am!
I did in fact stick to the 108 schedule. I didn´t skip a day, switched or modified at all. I also did HardCore every time it was scheduled. It was HARD. Specially on those weekends and when I went away on vacation in August. I think one day I even ended up doing Strength at 1:00 am! I really took it to heart and the fact that I am a little OCD and intense helped me stick to the schedule.
How have you been doing? On which day are you?

    1. Hi there!
Thanks for reading my blog!! I am super happy it is helping you!
I do remember the beginning of it and it was KILLER. But know this: keep at it and there will come a day when you won't break a sweat during Cardio.
As for Strength? That one always sucked. Big time. I just couldn't ever find myself liking that one. But hey, we all have our weaknesses, right?
Keep yogaing on and best of luck in your journey :)

  8. I just finished Day 3 of the UY, being a few years late to the party and all lol. So I am glad I have found your blog as I am going to read it each day so I feel like I am doing it with someone else.

It's the middle of winter here in England and I wish I lived somewhere like California or Hawaii where I could practice yoga outside. But it is what it is!

I am quite sore, especially my arms and wrists, so I am using a heat pack. Like you, I am doing all the chatarungas on my knees and I am walking, not jumping all the vinyasas.

So glad I found your blog.

    1. Hey there!
I am so glad you are reading my blog!! It psyches me out to see that it is still being read and that I am being helpful in some way, even if it is to have someone else to complain with when the classes get too tough, hehe.
I hear you about the weather! I now live in Edinburgh, so not too far from you, and it is COLD. I can't wait for spring to arrive! Hey, at least it isn't so dark at 3 pm anymore, yes?
You are being smart taking it easy with the chaturangas: they are tough! By the end of the program I could do them no prob off the knees; but I never did stick with the jumping back and forth the vinyasas. I did so for a while and it was not good for my neck. Actually, if I were to give you some good advice it would be this: be mindful of your back and neck. Super important! I obsessed about the upper arm strength and it led me to trouble with my neck. Take care of those arms and wrists and take some Ibuprofen as well: it helps ;)
Thanks for reading and I am always keeping an eye out for comments, so I try to reply right away.
So glad to be "doing" UY with you. Yoga on!

  9. Day 3- I completely agree! Strength flow is better than cardio yoga.
I completed the class and accepting my physical limitations. Arms definitely weaker than lower body here . I’m not going to lie, I’m not looking forward to yin yoga as this class
Challenges my monkey brain and holding a pose for 5-10 minutes is very challenging to my body. As a former ballet dancer, my body remembers being able to reach a higher level of flexibility that I’m uncomfortable to do. My body is willing but my mind (due to injuries and knee issues) is cautious to let go.

    1. Hi Sara!
Thank you for reading my blog! It blows my mind to see that after all this time people are still finding it. I hope it helps and encourages others in their journey.
You are barely starting! Be kind to yourself and in no time you will start to see a difference. Take good care of yourself and always listen to your body when it reminds you of your injuries.
If you keep reading the blog, you will see that Cardio ends up being one of my favourite classes and Strength one of the most hated ones. Yes: hate. That one is pure torture ;)
